June 2001

Association President

The reunion is only three months away.  Can't wait to see everyone from last year and meet some new guys/gals too.  The reunion committee has done a fine job of getting everything set up for us.

Lonnie will bring Membership application along with association applications, so when we are at Camp Pendleton and mingling with the active duty Marines of 1/4, we will have applications handy for them and their wives and children, in case they would like to join.

In the meantime if anyone need to get hold of me, my phone numbers are:

Home/Evenings: 719-748-8485

Work:  719-556-2550

Looking forward to seeing everyone in September.

ONCE A MARINE ALWAYS A MARINE

Financial Report upon Request please.
If an Association member would like a break down on the finances contact me and I will send it to you.  Thanks

Two Items

  1. If you move, change your phone number or get new e-mail address contact Thurman or myself.
  1. I still have a few guys that have not taken care of their dues for 2001.

If we have any members or family members that are sick or having problems let Doc Lantz know or myself.  This is an association and we will do our best to ‘take care of each other’ and will do all we can to help even if it’s no more than a card or a phone call.  I have heard of members being sick second or third hand or even after the fact it you would rather contact one of the other board members that is fine.  Just please let us know what is going on. None of us are alone.

Trivia Corner: DID YOU KNOW THIS? (
History of 1/4 continued from May
2001 Newsletter Part 14)

After the completion of Green Light in June, the battalion arrived home at Kaneohe Bay once again.  The 1st Battalion an essential part in the exercise and its performance was complimented by Major General Samuel S. Jack, Commanding General of the ‘V’ Marine Expeditionary Force.  In expressing his appreciation for the battalion’s contribution, he stated that without it ‘the operation would have lost much of it’s color’.

After ten years in the Hawaiian Islands the 1s Battalion 4th Marines was ordered to return to the Far East once again, on this occasion it was deployed to Okinawa.

With the intensification of the American involvement in the war in Viet Nam this Island Base Station was becoming a major military staging area for the war.  The purpose of the move of One Four to Okinawa was to strengthen American forces in the Far East with a possible deployment to the Republic of Viet Nam.

On 14 March 1965 it embarked on board the USS Valley Forge and sailed for Oahu.  Eleven days later the 1st Battalion arrived at Camp Schwab, Okinawa.

And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?

Matthew 6:27

One of the many gifts the Lord has given us is a powerful brain.  Our brain allows us to make complex decisions.  It also allows us to worry.

Worrying is not productive it’s a waste of time and unhealthy.  Excessive worrying causes emotional distress.  Emotional distress can cause physical ailments.  Worrying yourself sick is an old phrase based on fact.

People who worry spend most of their time worrying about things which have already happened.  The past cannot be changes.  Apologize to those you have offended and put it behind you.  If you worry about your sins repent and ask the Lord to forgive you.

Oddly many people spend a significant amount of time worrying about things that will never happen.  They play the ‘what if’ game.  My last fifteen working years were spent in management.  I was paid to play the ‘what if’ game.  If I do this what is the worst possible thing that an happen?  What is the best thing that can happen?  What is the most probable result?  That is a rational decision process.  If you live in North Dakota and are worrying about a hurricane striking Bismark in December, that is not rational.  You will make yourself sick worrying about something that will never happen.

Simplify your life.  Do not worry about things over which you have no control.  Trust the Lord to guide you.

For Your Information

Need to get your reunion information sheets turned into Gerry Van Reusen as soon as you can.

Also, I know it is not on the form but let Gerry know what unit you were with so he can put it on your name tag.

If you have any ‘photos’ that you would like to share at the reunion send them to Gerry with a self addressed envelope and you will get them back.

We are locked in with the One Four Battalion at Camp Pendleton, details to follow.  Hope to have them by next month.

Medical Updates

Cathy Bennett, wife of Brad Bennett had neck surgery and is doing fine almost back to 100%.

Bob Hatcher had knee surgery and is doing fine, recovery looks good.

A late entry to the Medical Updates is the passing of one of our own.  Donald H. Nelson, Charlie Company 1967/68 and a survivor of LZ Loon 4-6 June 1968.  He had been diagnosed with cancer and finally succumbed to his illness on 31 May 2001.

May he rest in peace.  More to follow.

By-Laws Committee

If you have any suggestions pass them onto either Brad Bennett and/or Thurman Moore.

Open Column - New Web Sitehttp://

I'm in the process of changing the web site over.  I hope to have it done by the first of April.  If you experience any difficulties in reaching, viewing or getting around in the web site it's because of my making these changes.  Please bare with me while I continue to improve the site.  There may be an address change in the near future if there is I'll notify everyone of the change and will post it in the newsletter.

I'm working with a personal friend, Emmett Queen, on the new site.  It will load a lot faster and a lot of the problem which you've been encountering will hopefully disappear.  By my working and viewing the web site from the work area of the site I don't see a lot of the problems you guys have.  I've been told about them and I've tried to eliminate them bout if I don't see them from my computer I can't make the corrections.  Anything you print from the web site which doesn't appear correct on the printed sheet is not a problem with the site.  It's how you have our computer set up to receive the Internet.  Several of the pages are printed in such a way as to not being able to be printed out, this will be corrected.  But any pages which have 'white' type or fonts, they can't be printed out unless you change your color of print or fonts on your personal computer.  If the lettering on the page is white print, it will be printed out as white print on the white paper and it will be 'invisible'.  It's only printed in white due to the background being used, that's the only font color which will show up clearly and easy to read.  Hope to have that cleared up also.  If there are any suggestions pass them along will be glad to hear them.

Having trouble with photo albums will have them cleared up shortly.  If you try to enter a site or page and it doesn't download or you receive an error notice from Yahoo/Geocities let me know.  This site is so big I may have missed or misplaced a page or two and it may not be on the new site as of yet.  You'll notice a few more graphics, cartoons and better sounds then before.  Most or all are built into the site.  The move was due to the amount of volume being handled by Yahoo/Geocities.  During their peak periods many sites, including ours, would not load correctly or completely.  Most Java Scripting would not load or fail to load if you went back to them, which includes the buttons I use.  Sometimes they'd load and other times they wouldn't, and if you viewed a site and came back to the buttons they didn't load at all or only partially.  Hopefully all of the problems will be straightened out with the new site.

Stay tuned.  THURMAN.

Here are the new addresses for the web site.  The old one still works for now.

http://www.thurmoe.addr.com

http://www.addr.com/~thurmoe

The old address under Geocities.com will only be open for a short time longer.  Hope everyone enjoys the new site.

Diabetes – Agent Orange Update

VA has formerly published rules in the Federal Register that will allow VA to provide benefits to veterans with ‘Type 2’ diabetes.  Under federal law, those rules cannot take effect for 60 days.  However, VA offices are already accepting claims from eligible Viet Nam veterans.

Veterans affected by the new rules will receive a priority for VA health care and depending upon the severity of their illnesses, disability compensation that ranges from $101 to $2,107 monthly.

VA estimates that about 9% of the 2.3 million Viet Nam veterans still alive have Type 2 diabetes.  The illness is characterized by high blood sugar levels caused by the body’s inability to process the hormone insulin.

Approximately 16% of veterans currently receiving care in VA medical facilities have been diagnosed with diabetes.  The number of diseases recognized by BVA as associated with Agent Orange has steadily increased since the early 1990’s.  The following conditions are now considered service-connected for veterans who served in Viet Nam; chloracne (a skin disorder), porphyria cutanea tarda (a liver disorder), acute or subacute peripheral neuropathy (a nerve disorder), and certain cancers including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, soft tissue sarcoma, Hodgkin’s disease, multiple myeloma, prostate cancer and respiratory cancers (including cancers of the lung, larynx, trachea and bronchus).
