Our Guys - One Four

One of Our Brothers...May He Rest In Peace

Thurman I received this yesterday could you include this on your site or news letter a tribute to a fine marine

semper fi Brian Mellor-----

Greetings, Marine !
It is with sadness of heart that I report the passing of a great Marine and one of which most of us were honored to have served with. Upon receiving the "Leatherneck Magazine" for June 2002, listed in the Memoriam section (page 63) was the announcement of TAPS for:

Melvin L. Hunter
Sgt Major / Retired
Served two tours in Viet Nam
The First ... Landed in Chu Lai with 1/4 ( 1965 )

Melvin Hunter was very much a "gung ho" Marine remembered as a Corporal at Kanaohe as well as when we landed at Chu Lai who was promoted to Sgt. E-5 shortly after arriving in Viet Nam. His MOS was 0351 ; therefore, should be well remembered by those of you in rockets.
He obviously enjoyed a successful career as a Marine, because the Leatherneck announcement states that he retired as a Sgt. Major after 21 years of service. Even though I have had no contact with him since our service together in Hawaii, Okinawa and Viet Nam .... I have thought of him often and am thankful that I had the opportunity to serve with someone that presented himself as a role model for junior NCO's and other Marines to learn from. We all should take the opportunity to "salute" this fine Marine ! If you have a copy of the photo taken of A-1-4 at Camp Schwab, Okinawa and would like to put a face with the name, please give me a call at 228/388-2253.
