I joined Delta in the first few weeks of Dec. I remember going out on my first LP and for some reason we had to comeback into the perimeter in the middle of the night. On the way back in a member of my LP had an accidental discharge and wounded his leg. Cannot remember his name, the rest of us were sent back out without a radio.
Also when we moved to C2, I remember Xmas eve and fireworks with shell casings landed too close to our perimeter.
As a new guy I carried way too much stuff and had a difficult time keeping up as we moved to C2 bridge. I learned a lot and thanks to my squad leader Roger Kelly Kia 2/02/68.
Was Kelly killed at cam lo?? We’re you at cam lo 2/2/68. Semper Fi
After a month in and around Strong Point A3, we spent ( C Co ) Christmas 1967 humping to C2 Bridge.
Roger was killed at Cam Lo 2/2/68, but not at the District HQ where the main battle took place. Our squad was assigned to a CAP unit that was somewhere in the village. I’ve never seen any mention of our fighting that night. Roger was the only Marine KIA, I was with Toby Bellevue on the other side of a very small perimeter. Toby got his first Purple Heart that night which would eventually become three.
Our squad (D 2nd plt 1st sq) was assigned to CAP unit in Cam Lo. The perimeter was attacked the night of 2/2/68. Roger was the only KIA from the sq, I can’t remember any other fatalities. Toby Bellevue got heart number 1 which would eventually become 3. I somehow got a small piece of shrapnel in my lower lip which was finally removed in Oct on the Repose.
