Report of Liaison S-2 to Ky Ha

17 June 1965

170930H – 1st Bn S-2 at An Tay (1) vic GC 520089.  Market Place was crowded.  A report came that a Bulldozer was attempting to move on main trail access vic GC 520086 to vic GC 523091.  The bulldozer had broken many trees, walkways and entrance stops enroute.  Bulldozer was cutting an access road for 2nd Plat Company ‘B’ 1st Bn. Approx 100 people quickly gathered and proceeded toward the trail.

1st Bn S-2 arrived and ordered bulldozer to return to ‘B’ Co. position.  PF Plt Cmdr and S-2 interpreter caused the crowd to disperse.  A squad from ‘B’ Co. was sent clear the trail of broken trees.  Hamlet Chief approved and appeared to be satisfied with action.

171230H – Same bulldozer as above attempted to cut a road between ‘A’ & ‘B’ companies positions.  Approx 100-150 people lined up in front of bulldozer vic GC 527104 and then surrounded bulldozer.  Some laid on the ground in front of the bulldozer.  Civilians claimed to be protecting a grave yard approx 300 mtrs to the North and in road path. Bulldozer was turned back and crowd dispersed.  1st Bn 6 and 2 investigated.  No violence was reported.

171530H – 1st Bn S-2 met with Mr. Cam, village Chief of Ky Ha village, explained the days happenings and was assured that the good will of the people was generally with the Marines.  Mr. Cam will inspect trail approx 180930H.
