1-5.          Company B, Company D and Company B 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion conducted a combat patrol     on Hoe Xuan Island, centered (BT 4215) on 12 September.

  1. At 120615H, B-Recon sighted seven junks vicinity (BT 430172) moving north.  Shots were fired across the bow and boats continued.  Were unable to apprehend.
  2. At 120630H, B-Recon received two rounds sniper fire vicinity (BT 435166).  Fire was returned with negative results.
  3. At 120715H, Engineers in support of Company D blew five holes in punji fence vicinity (BT 417156) wit bangalore torpedoes.
  4. At 120945H, company D destroyed approximately 350 large anti-helicopter punji stakes vicinity (BT 526157).
  5. During the day’s operation, a total of thirty-two VCS were apprehended on Hoa Xuan Island, centered (BT 4215) and taken to Regimental Collection Point.
  6. At 130830H, 3rd platoon, Company B heard on round small arms fire vicinity (BT 524111). Area checked, negative results.
  7. At 132110H, squad night patrol from Company B apprehended one adult male without ID card vicinity (BT 519089).  VCS was turned into regimental collection point.
  8. At 132215H, squad night patrol from Company D received three rounds sniper fire vicinity (BT 501064).  Squad established an ambush until 132245H.  Area checked, negative results.
  9. At 151215H, one man approached Company D defensive positions vicinity (BT 527081).  In the attempt to apprehend this man, four VCS without ID cards were apprehended.
  10. At 151225H, Company B received one round small arms fire vicinity (BT 522087).  Area checked with negative results.
  11. At 151428H, first platoon, Company D, while on combat patrol, received fire from six or seven snipers vicinity (BT 448077).  Fire was returned, area checked with negative results.
  12. At 151230H, second platoon, Company C, while on combat patrol, apprehended one VCS vicinity (BT 486107).  Man had no ID card and was turned into regimental collection point.
  13. At 151610H, Company D received sniper rounds vicinity (BT 526081).  Area checked with negative results.
  14. At 151915H, third platoon, Company D received three rounds sniper fire vicinity (BT 527082).  Fire was returned, area checked with negative results.
  15. At 151935H, second platoon, Company D received two rounds sniper fire vicinity (BT 525080).  Fire was returned, area checked with negative results.
  16. At 151935H, Company C observed approximately twenty-five tracer rounds fired from vicinity (BT 511104) toward Ky Xuan Island.  At 152000H, a squad night patrol from Company A went through this area with negative results.
  17. At 152145H, third platoon, Company B received sniper fire vicinity (BT 528083).  Fire was returned, area checked with negative results.
  18. At 152150H, squad night patrol from Company D apprehended one VCS vicinity (BT 515075).  VCS was turned into regimental collection point.
  19. First platoon, Company D while on a combat patrol, received sniper fire at 151937H vicinity (BT 447076).  Artillery called, sniper fire ceased.  Area not checked due to patrol commitment.
  20. At 161003H, first platoon, Company D received sniper fire vicinity (BT 425088).  Artillery called, sniper fire ceased.  AO checked area with negative results.
  21. At 161545H, Ly Tin District Headquarters requested artillery for PF platoon pinned down by sniper fire vicinity (BT 453084).  Fired 81mm mortar from Hill 69 (BT 468068).  VC dispersed, one house destroyed, and two civilians wounded.
  22. At 161830H, first platoon, Company C sent a patrol to vicinity (BT 515123) to investigate large boat unloading possible supplies or lumber.  Patrol found bundles of wood.
  23. At 162257H, vicinity (BT 506068) one trip flare set off.  Company D requested illumination, received two rounds, negative results.
  24. At 162320H, Company D had suspected enemy probe vicinity (BT 517073).  Requested illumination, received two rounds, negative results.
  25. At 170012H, waterborne patrol heard automatic weapons fire vicinity (BT 495108).  Could not determine exact location, did not check area.
  26. At 162210H, MAG-36 sentries observed person or object vicinity (BT 525115).  Challenged and received no reply.  Fired nine rounds, checked area, negative results.
  27. At 162220H, MAG-36 sentries observed a person or object vicinity (BT 532117).  Challenged and received no reply.  Fired ten rounds, checked area, negative results.
  28. At 170030H, MAG-36 sentries observed four or five people vicinity (BT 525115).  Challenged and people fled.  Sentry fired with negative results.
  29. At 162025H, a boat without lights approached within twenty-five yards of beach in MAG-36 area vicinity (BT 520134).  Light came on and boat retreated before action could be taken.
  30. At 172037H, Company B requested illumination to observe rock throwers vicinity (BT 528084).  One man observed, two rounds fired, negative results.
