Training

  1. Training was continued with on-the-job instruction within the rifle companies, H&S Company and direct support units.  Orientation and indoctrination briefings were conducted for all personnel joining the Battalion.
  2. Rifle company training emphasized General Military Subjects directly applicable to the present mission of the Battalion.
  3. In addition to on-the-job training, H&S Company conducted semi-formal training in various subjects including communication security, compass and map reading, helicopter support team operation, AN/PRC-25 (radio), operators vehicle maintenance, baking, meat cutting, fuel mixing (flame thrower), gun drill (81mm mortar and 106mm recoilless rifle platoon), VD lectures, mines, demolitions and booby traps.
  4. 109 Marines attended the two-day Regimental Mine Warfare School.
  5. Training for the local Popular Forces and Self Defense Corps (Home Guard) was conducted during this period. Coordination was established with unit leaders and district headquarters.  In Ky Ha Village training was conducted in bayonet and hand to hand combat fighting.  A total of 30 PF attended.  Results were considered good.
  6. Engineer training was conducted in tunnel probing and searching for hidden caves.  An officer from 4th Marines came to the Battalion to instruct personnel in the techniques effectively employed.
  7. Communications security school was held by Detachment J from 0830-1030 on scheduled days.  Over 100 people were instructed in the elements and techniques of communications security.
  8. 60 mm and 81mm training was held to give additional operational instruction in the effective use of these weapons.
