- Morale, PX, Postal Affairs, Liberty, R&R.
Morale is excellent. The fact that this Battalion’s deployment to a more active role in the field is highly probable has helped keep the morale in a high state. The entire period was spent in the relative comfort of the Phu Bai Combat Base; hot ‘A’ and ‘B’ rations were served, showers were available three times daily, the clubs maintained good supply of liquid refreshment, and movies were available to all hands, with an afternoon show for those on watch in addition to the evening show. PX facilities were available to all hands not on watch and provided adequate ‘health ad comfort’ items. Mail service is good, although it has been sporadic at times; Liberty was not authorized to the command during the period. R&R quotas have increased, and at the present rate all members of the command should be able to take advantage of the opportunity. Hawaii was opened as an additional R&R site this month.
- Chaplain’s Activities.
On 4 July, a donation of $140.00 was tendered to the Vietnamese local orphanage, through the auspices of the 1st Battalion.
During the month of July, some 90 Marines received counseling. Sundays Services amounted to fourteen; weekdays services amounted to 36, which encompasses not only this immediate area but several of the CAC villages. Masses were also offered in the Dong Ha and Cam Lo area. Memorial Mass was held at CAC-11. During this month a lay-leader program was established with the appointment and instruction of lay-leaders for Protestant and Catholic personnel.
