Mission Summary – March 1967

 

Operations/Training

  1. Mission.  During this reporting period the 1st Battalion 4th Marines continued its assignment as the Special Landing Force, OPCON to CTG 79.5.  Missions were assigned as follows:

                        1-3 March            Continue Operations Deckhouse VI-Phase II

                        3    March            Conduct tactical amphibious withdrawal.  Embark onboard ARG Shipping.

Summary of Operations/Activities

  1. On 1 March 1967 Companies A and B continued search and destroy operations advancing south to phase line Bravo.  Company D continued search and destroy operations along the northern boundary to prevent infiltration into the areas behind Company A and B. Company C continued its assigned mission of maintaining the perimeter around the Beach area.  Battery G and 107 Battery continued to support the Battalion from Blue Beach.

At 011015H at BS 795484 a platoon from Company D received 6 rounds sniper fire from BS 796485.  The platoon overran the position and captured 1 VCS.

Company B reported at 011100H receiving 10 rounds from a village located at BS 817445.  Company B returned fire, then searched the village discovering numerous installations and supplies.  Means were not available for the evacuation of the supplies; therefore all supplies and installations were destroyed.

Sniper fire was received by Company D at 011135H near BS 795472.  The unit assaulted by fire and maneuver resulting in 1 VC/KIA (conf) 2 VC/KIA (prob).  One rifle was captured.

Recon platoon at 011145H observed a Viet Cong with rifle in a cane field located at BS 797493.  The attached Sniper Team took the VC under fire, 1 VC/KIA.  Company A reported locating and destroying five 250-pound bombs (duds).

At 020150H Company B received 1 incoming mortar round at an ambush site.  Company B secured a landing zone and Med-Evacs 1 friendly KIA and 5 friendly WIA.

Companies A and B continued the attack southward at 020815H.

Company D at 020930H located at BS 795491 found 180 cubic feet of VC supplies.  No means were available for transporting supplies to secure area.  The supplies were destroyed.

At 021230H a Company D unit acting as a blocking force located at BS 793493 encountered enemy with automatic weapons causing 3 VC/KIA (conf).

At 021310H a Company C patrol conducting search and destroy operations at BS 803473 found and destroyed large amounts of supplies buried in hut.  Documents were discovered and turned over to S-2.

A platoon from Company D at 021505H located at BS 791487 received 5 incoming sniper rounds.  Company D unit assaulted positions and confirmed 1 VC/KIA.

At 021800H a Frag Order was received from CTG 79.5 indicating termination of Deckhouse VI-Phase II on the following day.

At 030310H Company D ambush located at BS 794443 took approximately 12 VC under fire resulting in 5 VC/KIA (conf).

Back loading began at 030800H.  All units had completed back loading by 031230H with the exception of Company B.

Company B began back loading at 031600H and was completed at 031630H.

At 031800H Operation Deckhouse VI-Phase II was concluded.

            No training was conducted during this period.
