Logistics – May 1968

Logistics

  1. Supply.
  2. Class I.  The stockage objective remained at 15 days at A-4.  On the average, only about ten days were maintained during the period.  One meal of ‘R’ rations was served every other day at A-4 and Yankee Station, while two meals were served on a daily basis at C-2 Bridge.  A-4 and Yankee Station received supplemental rations including canned fruit, bread, assorted condiments and milk.  Within three days after moving to Camp Carroll ‘R’ rations were being served three times a day to one Company (rein) and the Bn Command Group.  One ‘R’ ration was being served to one Company on Route #9 and two Companies (-) were receiving ‘R’ rations at the Rockpile.
  3. Class II.  Battalion Supply remained at Dong Ha with FLSG/B as the source of supply.  Shortages in the following items were again experienced during this period:
  4. Mask, Protective, M-17 Medium Size
  5. Body Armor, Upper Torso, All sizes
  6. Utilities, Shirt (jungle) and trousers (jungle)
  7. Class III.  Only about three days of Class III were maintained at A-4 due to lack of adequate storage space.  This was not increased due to operational commitments and lack of earth moving equipment.
  8. Class IV.  Class IV was adequate during this period.
  9. Class V.  A fifteen-day stockage objective was maintained at A-4, Yankee Station and C-2 Bridge.  There remains a shortage in the following items:
  10. L312 – Signal, White Star Parachute
  11. K143 – Mine, AP, M-18 (claymore)
  12. H555 – 66mm Heat Rocket (LAAW)

  1. Transportation
  2. Organic.  Only three M422A1 (mighty mites) were on hand during this period.  These vehicles were utilized for administrative runs to Dong Ha, as well as local runs between A-4, Yankee Station and C-2 Bridge.  The Battalion presently has three M-37 (PC) trucks operationally ready.
  3. Support.
  4. Vehicular.  The 9th Motor Transport Battalion provided two trucks at times but due to other commitments this was not on a continuous basis.  The amount of time the trucks were available did not always provide sufficient household runs.  The available M50A1 water tanker (1000 gallon) was provided by FLSG/B and driven by an operator from 9th Motor Transport Battalion.  Without the tanker there would have been a definite problem in resupplying water to A-4 and Yankee Station.
  5. Engineer Support
  6. Engineer support teams provided the Battalion with demolitions capabilities.  A TD-18 tractor was utilized extensively at the trash dump and for building storage areas.  However, most of the time, the tractor was dead lined due to mechanical difficulties and a lack of spare parts.
