Medical and Dental Affairs

  1. The total number of visits to the Battalion Aid Stations during the month of June 1968 were 1,476.
  2. Prevalent medical entities encountered were:
  3. Gonorrhea – 3
  4. Diarrhea – 61
  5. Malaria – 8
  6. URI – 3
  7. NP disorders – 12
  8. Rat Bites – 14
  9. FUO – 73
  10. Dermatological Conditions – 14
  11. Heat Injuries – 15
  12. NSU – 2
  13. All suspected and confirmed cases of venereal disease were given a Serological Test for Syphilis in accordance with NAVMED 22-18 and the results entered in the individual’s health record.
  14. A total of 129 patients were referred to Delta Company, 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Division (Rein) FMF.  Of those referred the following were consults:
  15. Dental – 18
  16. Ophthalmology – 4
  17. Eyes, nose, throat – 12
  18. Urology – 2
  19. Internal Medicine – 9
  20. Surgical – 7
  21. Proctology – 1
  22. Patients in need of further care were referred from the Medical Battalion to the following medical facilities:
  23. NSA, DaNang – 36
  24. USS Sanctuary – 5
  25. USS Repose – 11
  26. Phu Bai – 46
  27. 22nd Casualty Staging Facility – 9
  28. The following is a breakdown of casualties for this period:

  30. WIA – 121
  31. MIA – 0
  32. NBD – 2
  33. DOW – 2
  34. NBC – 119
  35. Weekly malaria prophylaxis was continued through the use of Chloroquine Primaquine tablets.
  36. Sanitation inspections were held weekly in accordance with Article P6000.4D in the Battalion area (Dong Ha, LZ Stud and LZ Mike).  Sanitary facilities at the present are considered adequate.
  37. Three Battalion Aid Stations were maintained during the month of June.  A Forward Battalion Aid Station consisting of a Battalion Surgeon and six Hospital Corpsmen located in the field until 22 June at LZ Stud, a secondary Battalion Aid Station consisting of two Hospital Corpsmen located at LZ Mike, and a rear Battalion Aid Station consisting of eight Hospital Corpsmen located at Dong Ha.  All injuries and maladies encountered were treated by the line Company Corpsman and if needed sent to one of the Battalion Aid Stations for further treatment and evacuation.  No serious delays were encountered in resupply.
