Medical and Dental Affairs
- The total number of visits to the Battalion Aid Station during the month of September was 2,304.
- Prevalent medical entities encountered were:
- Gonorrhea – 8
- Diarrhea – 40
- Malaria – 11
- Upper respiratory infection – 31
- Neuro-psychiatric disorders – 8
- Rat bites – 5
- Fever unknown origin – 103
- Dermatological conditions – 202
- Heat casualties – 73
- Non-Specific Urethraitus – 1
- All suspected and confirmed cases of venereal disease were given a Serological Test in accordance with NAVMED 22-18 and the results entered in the individual’s health record.
- A total of 77 patients were referred to Delta Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Division (Rein), FMF. Of those referred, the following were consults:
- Dental – 43
- Ophthalmology – 4
- Eyes, nose, throat – 10
- Urology – 3
- Internal medicine – 9
- Surgical – 6
- Proctology – 2
- Patients requiring further consultation were referred from the Medical Battalion to the following medical facilities:
- NSA, Da Nang – 30
- USS Sanctuary – 18
- USS Repose – 17
- Quang Tri – 32
- 22nd Casualty Staging Facility – 22
- The following is a breakdown of casualties encountered for the month:
- KIA – 0
- MIA – 0
- WIA – 5
- Non-hostile death – 1
- DOW – 0
- NBC – 130
- Weekly malaria prophylaxis was continued with the use of Chloroquine-Primaquine tablets in the Battalion Rear. Daily malaria prophylaxis was continued with the use of Dapsone in conjunction with weekly use of Chloroquine-Primaquine in Battalion forward areas.
- Sanitation inspections were held daily and weekly in accordance with article P6000.4D in the Battalion areas at both Dong Ha and Vandegrift. Sanitary facilities at the present time are considered adequate.
- Two Battalion Aid Stations were maintained during the month of September. A forward Battalion Aid Station (BAS) consisting of a Battalion Burgeon and eight Hospital Corpsmen located at Vandegrift and a secondary BAS located at Dong Ha consisting of ten Hospital Corpsmen. All injuries and maladies encountered were treated by the line Company Corpsman, and when required, casualties were transferred for further treatment. No serious delays were encountered in resupply or evacuation this period.
