Medical and Dental Affairs
- The total number of visits to the Battalion Aid Station during the month of February was 1,487.
- Prevalent medical entities encountered were:
- Gonorrhea – 3

- Rat Bites – 3

- Dermatological conditions – 520
- Heat casualties – 0

- All suspected and confirmed cases of venereal disease were given an STS in accordance with MANMED 22-18 and the results entered in the individual’s health record.
- A total of 75 patients were referred to 3rd Medical Battalion 3rd Marine Division (Rein) FMF. Of those referred the following were consults:
- ENT – 3
- Urology – 6
- Surgical – 20
- NP – 2
- Internal Medicine – 1
- Dermatology – 24
- Orthopedic – 19
- Following referrals were made to:
- NSA Da Nang – 4
- USS Sanctuary – 3
- USS Repose – 7
- Total patients referred for dental treatment 101
- The following is a breakdown of casualties encountered for the month:
- KIA – 5
- WIA – 12
- MIA – 0
- NHD – 2
- DOW – 1
- NBC – 62
- Weekly malaria prophylaxis was continued with the use of chloroauine-primaquine tablets in the Battalion area rear. Daily malaria prophylaxis was continued with the use of Dapsone in conjunction with weekly use of chloroquine-primaquine in Battalion forward areas. Personnel from all areas in the rear were mustered daily and given Dapsone.
- Sanitation inspection was held daily and weekly in accordance with Art. P6000.4D in the Battalion area (VCB and Quang Tri). Sanitary facilities at present time are considered adequate.
- Two Battalion Aid Stations were maintained during the month of February. A Forward BAS consisting of a Battalion Surgeon and eight Hospital Corpsmen located at VCB and a secondary BAS located at Quang Tri consisting of nine Hospital Corpsmen. All injuries and malaria encounters were treated by the line company Corpsmen and when required casualties were transferred for further treatment. No serious delays were encountered in resupply or evacuation during this period.
- Rear echelon personnel were administered PPD’s totaling 137. Also, Delta Company was given smallpox, cholera, plague and GG’s accounting for 349 immunizations. One case of infectious hepatitis occurred in Bravo Company, the patient being med-evaced to the USS Repose. A sufficient quantity of GG was obtained from FLC in Da Nang and immunization is being accomplished.
- Lectures are given regularly at both Battalion Aid Stations.
- With the cooperation of Battalion Rears Dental Units and 4th and 9th Marines Dental Units a total of 101 patients were referred. All arrivals into the Battalion are screened and these presenting a class 3 or 4 dental profile are referred to either unit prior to going forward.
