Summary – July 1969

 

Narrative Summary

  1. General overview of all activities.

As the month of July commenced the A Command Group was located at VCB along with Company C.  Companies B, C, and D were OPCON to 3/4.

On 2 July the Battalion assumed responsibility for the defense of VCB.  In addition to the resumption of OPCON of the organic companies, three companies from 3/4 were chopped OPCON to the Battalion to support the execution of this mission.

During the early part of the month Company D participated in Operation ‘Arlington Canyon’ with 3/4.

On 8 July, The Battalion was alerted to be prepared to move to the Cua Viet R&R Center on 9 July.  This move was accomplished without incident and the Battalion of 10 and 11 July encamped at Cau Viet.  On 12 July the Battalion was chopped OPCON to the 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division (Mech), US Army and commenced operation ‘William’s Glade’.  On 22 July, the Battalion was helilifted out of the operational area and returned to VCB.

On 23 July, the Battalion once again assumed responsibility for the defense of VCB.  Recent AO changes had eliminated the requirement to provide security for FSB Cates and Elliot Combat Base and added the requirement for positioning a Company at Ca Lu to provide security for a 105mm Artillery Battery located there.

Late in the month, the Battalion deployed two Companies to conduct a search and clear operation along the ridgeline north of the Ba Long River.  (Operation Order 2-69 is forwarded as a supporting document).

The 4th Marines operation ‘Herkimer Mountain’ terminated on 16 July, and operation ‘Georgia Tar’ commenced.  At the close of the month all of the Battalion’s activities were a part of this new operation.

  1. Command Relations.

The Battalion remained under the control of the 4th Marine Regiment for most of the month.  The 3rd Marine Division assumed OPCON of the Battalion during the Cua Viet R&R.  During the period that the Battalion participated in operation “William’s Glade’ OPCON was passed to the 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division (Mech), US Army.

Operational control of several Companies from 3/4 and 3/9 was held frequently throughout the month.  The Organic Companies of the Battalion were also periodically chopped OPCON to other Battalions.  The details of specific units, times and dates are contained in the Sequential Listing of Significant Events portion of this chronology.

  1. Mission Assigned.

The mission varied during the month.  Defense of VCB was the predominant mission, interrupted during the period 9-22 July when the Battalion engaged in rehabilitation at the Cua Viet R&R Center and participated in Operation ‘William’s Glade’.
