Chronological Sequence of Events

May

5          Bn intimately involved with refugee staging operations at Subic Bay, R.P. Spirit and enthusiasm of troops involved extremely high.

Marines used extensively as security and escorts for refugees arriving by air and proceeding to staging areas on Grande Island. Battalion involved on massive scale in setting up refugee facilities on Grande Island, Subic Bay. Entire Battalion involved in the movement of equipment, setting up over 150 tents, 2500 camp cots, assisting in the orderly control of evacuees, off-loading barges and moving support gear, erecting other necessary facilities and aiding in the settling of refugees.

Attached to 31st MAU (Operational control passed to CO 31 MAU)

Training altered to support refugee operations.

Directed by G-3 III MAF to embark troops aboard USS DULUTH and USS MT VERNON.

6          Embarkation of 1st Bn, 4th Marines and available attachments aboard USS DULUTH and USS MT VERNON.

7          Debarkation of 1st Bn, 4th Marines and available attachments board USS DULUTH and USS MT VERNON.

9          Bn Commander’s inspection of all personnel and individual equipment.

BLT 1/4 morning run (3 miles).

10        Two Companies (-) completed JEST school.   Water survival training continued. Entire Battalion involved in long distance hikes and rigorous physical conditioning program.

11        Bn continues to support refugee processing operations.   20-man security teams placed on board Korean and Vietnamese ships.

12        Company A and Company B conduct extensive training in Subic and Zambales training areas.

13        Co A and Co B recovered from training areas; BLT placed on alert for possible involvement in Cambodia.

14        Company D (-) (120-man unit) with Tactical Command Group attached to CTG 79.9 for Special Operation related to USS MAYAGUEZ operation.

15        BLT 1/4 embarked aboard USS OKINAWA, USS DULUTH, USS MT VERNON and USS BARBOUR COUNTY. Shipboard training program established.

20        Return of Co D (-) and Command Group from seizure of USS MAYAGUEZ.   Maj Gen Houghten, CG 3rd Mar Div, welcomed unit back at dock side ceremonies, Subic Bay, R.P.

22        Debarkation of BLT 1/4 from ARG Alpha shipping.   Reestablished in MAU Camp.

23        Emphasis on Kubasaki enrollment.

TAC Party live fire training at Wild Horse Creek, controlled 5 flights of A-4F’s.

1st Echelon maintenance conducted on all gear.

BLT 1/4 morning run (5 miles).

26        Company A to Subic Training Area 1 and 2 for offensive and defensive tactics and extensive night patrolling.

Company B and Company C to Zamables Training Area for extensive offensive and defensive tactics including coordinated live FIREX.

27        81MM Mortar Plt, Btry G, 106 RR Plt to Zambales Training Area for extensive FIREX.

28        Arrival of Recon Plt from Okinawa and attachment to BLT 1/4.

29        Arrival of AmTrac Plt and SCAMP unit and subsequent attachment to BLT 1/4.

30        Companies A, B, and C, Btry G, 81mm Mortar Plt, 106 RR Plt return from training areas.

31        BLT 1/4 Saturday morning run.

Begin preparations to reembark aboard ARG Alpha shipping.

Personnel and equipment inspections conducted for all units who returned from weeklong field training.
