Intelligence – October 1965

Intelligence

Section III

A.                Summary of enemy activity

1.                  A generalized increase of information received from civilians resulting in highly successful sweeps (24 Oct 65 – Operation Snaggletooth) was the most salient feature of the months activities.  The Self Defense Corps, as organized by the First Battalion, is proving itself a vital link of communication between the hamlets and village areas and the battalion at large.

2.                  The Civil Action/People-to-people programs have enhanced the opportunity for civilians to pass information to this headquarters.  This, in addition to the saturation patrolling continually conducted by all units have provided extensive information on enemy movements and activities.

3.                  The continuing non-availability of Air-Photos has hampered the battalions program of registration and security of local areas.  The maps currently in use do not provide accurate information on trails and homes.  Air-ph9ots would show actual locations.

4.                  The lack of interpreters has also hindered the intelligence gathering activities of the unit as the inability to communicate clearly, often times creates more confusion then good information.

D.                Weather and Terrain (October 1965)

1.                  The period was characterized by heavy rainfall.  A total of 17.92 inches fell during the month.  The period 1-8 October had only occasional showers, however the period 9-23 October had almost continuous rainfall both day and night.  Period 24-31 October was generally clear with occasional showers and low visibility during early morning hours.

2.                  The heat had little effect on movement of troops in any area except during operations vicinity (BT 4215).  Reflected heat from sand and little wind accounted for abnormal high heat in this area.  Vegetation had no effect on movement on the peninsula or adjacent islands.

3.                  On road trafficability is considered good and off road traffic delay fair to untrafficable.  During wet weather, on road trafficability is considered fair to poor with some areas becoming untrafficable.
