  1. Purpose.  To inform this Command of a Meritorious Mast held for Lance Corporal John J. KUBELIS of Company B.
  2. General.  Meritorious Mast was conducted by the Commanding Officer in accordance with the provisions of reference (a).  The following remarks were made:

Lance Corporal KUBELIS, I take great pleasure in commending you at this time for your outstanding action on the afternoon of 16 December 1965, while attached to the 3rd Platoon, Company B, on the Island of Ky Hoa, South Viet Nam.  During the time when the 3rd Platoon mistakenly came under heavy rocket and machinegun fire from friendly aircraft, you without hesitation, exposed yourself to the fire.  You ran to the Platoon ammunition dump and grabbed the only flares available.  You ran back up the hill with complete disregard for your own safety exposing yourself while the aircraft continued their heavy fire and proceeded to fire two flares at the on-coming aircraft.  Your actions may have prevented the aircraft from making further attacks on the position.

Your aggressive action, initiative, courage, professional competence, and the ability to remain calm in a sudden and unexpected situation was in keeping with the highest traditions of the U. S. Marine Corps.

  1. Action.  The custodian of the service record book of Lance Corporal John J. KUBELIS is directed by copy hereof to make an entry in the service record as outlined in reference (b).
  2. Self-cancellation.  31 January 1966.

  1. J. PERRICH
