Medical and Dental Affairs
- The total number of visits to the Battalion Aid Station during the month of January was 2,051.
- Prevalent medical entities encountered were:
- Gonorrhea – 11
- Diarrhea – 228
- Malaria – 5
- URI – 67
- NP Disorders – 13
- Rat Bites – 5
- FUO – 39
- Dermatological Conditions – 395
- Heat Casualties – 10
- NSU – 1
- All suspected and confirmed cases of Venereal Disease were given an STS in accordance with MANMED 22-18 and the results entered in the individual’s health record.
- A total of 124 patients were referred to 3rd Medical Battalion 3rd Marine Division (Rein), FMF. Of those referred the following were consults:
- Dental – 75
- Ophthalmology – 3
- ENT – 4
- Urology – 119
- Internal Medicine – 11
- Surgical – 12
- Patients requiring further consultation were referred from 3rd Medical Battalion to the following Medical Facilities:
- NSA, Da Nang – 14
- USS Sanctuary – 5
- USS Repose – 4
- The following is breakdown of casualties encountered for the month:
- KIA – 3
- WIA – 18
- MIA – 0
- NHD – 0
- DOW – 0
- NBC – 88
- Weekly malaria prophylaxis was continued with the use of chlorequine primaquine tablets in the Battalion area rear. Daily malaria prophylaxis was continued with the use of Dapsone in conjunction with weekly use of chloroquine-primaquine in Battalion Forward Areas. Personnel from all areas in the rear were mustered daily and given Dapsone.
- Sanitation inspections were held daily and weekly in accordance with art. P6000.4D in the Battalion area (Vandegrift Combat Base and Quang Tri). Sanitary facilities at present time are considered adequate.
- Two Battalion Aid stations were maintained during the month of January. A Forward BAS consisting of a Battalion Surgeon and eight Hospital Corpsman located at Vandegrift Combat Base and a secondary BAS located at Quang Tri consisting of nine Hospital Corpsman. All injuries and malaria encountered were treated by the Line Company Corpsman and when required, casualties were transferred for further treatment. No serious delays were encountered in resupply or evacuation during this period.
- Forward echelons of Company C and H&S Co. received smallpox, cholera gamma globulin and plague which accounted for 499 immunizations.
- Lectures are given regularly at both Battalion Aid Stations.
