Communications

1. Message Center.  This section provided the shackle sheets and Brevity Codes for the Command and attachments.  Classified and Non-Classified message handling is exercised.  A Forward Message Center has been established at Vandegrift Combat Base.
2. Radio.  The radio section continued its mission of maintaining communications with all elements through the use of radio relay sites where required.  The section continues to support attached elements with batteries and spare parts when required.
3. Covered Circuit.  The KY-8 circuit was not in use during the month of October.  The KY-38/AN/PRC-77 had been used and proved ineffective due to technical problems during the last operation.
4. Wire.  The wire section had completed the installation of the switchboard at Quang Tri with two direct lines with Quang Tri Switchboard.  Two temporary switchboards have been set up at FSB Cates and FSB Shepherd.
5. Electronics Repair.  The electronics repair section continues to provide second echelon repair in support of the Command and attached elements while in a static or semi-permanent position.
6. Radio Relay.  Since the Battalion CP moved FSB Cates, radio relay had been provided and is operating in a satisfactory manner.
7. Critical Shortage.  A shortage of spare parts for radio set AN/PRC-25 still exists.  Most critical at this time is the module A-9.
8. Equipment Repairs.  During the month of October, the following equipment was repaired (first and second echelon).
