Intelligence

During the month of December, the Battalion took part in two operations and one Cordon.

The two operations were:  Operation SCOTLAND II and Operation KENTUCKY.

The Cordon was part of Operation KENTUCKY.

  1. Enemy.  This month of December started out with very little or contacts or sightings.  In Cam Lo Village at Grid XD 107564 the Battalion with assistance from Task Force Bravo and the 2nd ARVN Regiment surrounded the village on the night of 15-16 December.  The following day the 2nd ARVN Regiment started their search, after about five days the Regiment had detained about 200 Viet Cong suspects.  On 26 December 1/4 returned to Operation SCOTLAND II.   On 29 December Co. Charlie/1/4 found a large hospital and bunker complex at Grid XD 844558, on 30 December Co. Charlie/1/4 found a large ammunition cache at Grid XD845561.   It is noted that all bunker complexes and the hospital have been found close to streams, also it is believed that parts of the 27th NVA Regiment may still be in the area of operations assigned to 1/4.   Heavy trail activity 4000 meters east of where Co. C found the hospital.   Also, at Grid XD 844558 Co. C found an NVA grave with a marker.

The marker gave the mans’ name and the date of death as having belonged to the 27th Bn.  It is also believed that more gear will be found in the area of Grids XD 8459 to XD 8657.

  1. Weather.  The month of December has been mostly clear with light to moderate rain showers, with temperatures ranging from 85 degrees during the day and from 72 to 65 degrees at night.
  2. Terrain.  The terrain in the area of operations vicinity Grids XD 8257 – XD 8455 – XD 8555 is mountainous with a few sharply rising slopes with very heavy foliage and thick canopy with many streams.
