The Battalion was engaged in the defense of the Dong Ha Combat Base, during the reporting period. In addition, the Battalion had the mission of security for the Bulk Fuel storage area at the mouth of the Cua Viet River (YD 346698). The bridge located at YD 148604 was provided security during the reporting period.
Enemy contact during the reporting period was light. The largest sighting was of 5 VC/NVA at 192250H made by a B Company defensive position.
There were no VC/NVA KIA’s confirmed or probable during the reporting period.
One Thompson submachine gun and 3 magazines plus miscellaneous gear were captured after a Security Detail for a civilian Survey team had come under VC/NVA sniper fire. Weapon and miscellaneous gear found after VC/NVA fled area.

- Weather and Terrain
- The weather for the reporting period consisted of rain on numerous occasions. On one occasion flooding of the Cam Lo River caused displacement of the platoon defending positions around Dong Ha Combat Base to be rebuilt above ground level. Heavy rain did not seriously hamper vehicular traffic in or around the Dong Ha Combat Base. On the days where there was no rain the sky was generally clear and sunny.
- The terrain in and around the Dong Ha Combat Base consisted of rice paddies, populated areas and the Song Hieu Giang River to the north. To the northeast of Dong Ha Combat Base is Highway #1. To the north and west is Highway #9. A Junction of the two highways is located at YD 243600, approximately 700 meters northeast of Dong Ha Combat Base. Loose surface roads connected all points of Dong Ha Combat Base.
- The unit at the north of the Cua Viet River encountered a sandy beach area. The terrain at the position on the Bridge Defense consisted of rice paddies and the Song Cam Lo River, which runs from west to east. A loose surface.
