Intelligence

  1. General.  (Period covered:   1 November 1966 to 30 November 1966) The Battalion was actively engaged in the defense of the Hue/Phu Bai Vital Area, during the reporting period.  In addition, B and C Companies were deployed in the Truoi Operating Area.  During the reporting period enemy contact was light but increasing towards the end of the reporting period.  There were several minor incidents occurring along the defensive wire of the Phu Bai Vital Area.  Much of the enemy contact involved the Combined Action Company (CAC) while on patrol and/or ambushes.

During the reporting period there were a total of 20 VC KIA (probable) due to an artillery mission by Marine Artillery.  No VC KIA (confirmed).

(a)               Terrain encountered during the reporting period consisted primarily of rice paddies, rolling terrain, and populated areas.

(b)               Company C while in the Truoi Bridge area encountered many flooded rivers and streams in a jungle with a heavy canopy.  Due to the monsoon many of these rivers and streams were flooded limiting movement of troops and vehicles in these areas.
