Medical and Dental Affairs

  1. The total number of visits to the Battalion Aid Stations during the month of December was 2,810.
  2. Prevalent medical entities encountered were:
  3. Gonorrhea – 6
  4. Diarrhea – 46
  5. Malaria – 11
  6. URI – 69
  7. NP disorders – 4
  8. NSU – 0
  9. Rat bites – 3
  10. FUO – 41
  11. Dermatological conditions – 601
  12. Heat casualties – 0
  13. All suspected and confirmed cases of venereal disease were given an STS in accordance with MANMED 22-18 and the results entered in the individual’s health record.
  14. A total of 107 patients were referred to 3rd Medical Battalion 3rd Marine Division (Rein) FMF.  Of those the following were the results:

  16. Ophthalmology – 64
  17. ENT – 16
  18. Urology – 15
  19. Internal medicine – 31
  20. Surgical – 14
  21. Proctology – 0

Patients requiring further treatment and consultation were referred from 3rd Medical Battalion to the following facilities:

  2. USS, Sanctuary – 16
  3. USS, Repose – 28
  4. 6th Conv Cen – 19
  5. 22nd CST – 9
  6. The following is a breakdown of casualties encountered for the month
  7. KIA – 0

  13. Weekly malaria prophylaxis was continued with the use of chloroquine-Primaquine tablets in the Battalion rear.  Daily malaria prophylaxis was continued with the use of Dapsone in conjunction with weekly use of Chloroquine-Primaquine in the Battalion Forward Areas.  Personnel from all areas in the rear were mustered daily and given Dapsone.
  14. Sanitation inspections were held daily and weekly in accordance with Art. P6000.4D in the Battalion area (VCB) and Quang Tri.  Sanitary facilities at the present time are considered adequate.
  15. Two Bn Aid Stations were set up and maintained during the month of December.  A forward BAS consisting of a Battalion Surgeon and Hospital Corpsman located at VCB and a secondary BAS located at Quang Tri consisting of nine medical corpsmen.  All injuries and maladies encountered were treated by the line company corpsman and when required casualties were transferred for further treatment.  No serious delays were encountered in resupply or evacuation during this period.
  16. Forward echelons of the Company A received smallpox, cholera, gamma globin and plague which accounted for 252 immunizations.
  17. The BAS REAR is unable to administer required immunizations for personnel departing on R&R and rotating to CONUS because of the lack of power to operate refrigerator.  Patients having sufficient time in rear are referred to 3rd Medical Battalion and the remainder of patients obtain immunization in Da Nang.
  18. Lectures are given regularly at both Battalion Aid Stations.
