1. The daily average number patients seen in BAS was 12. Of these, 38 were admitted to the BAS ward for further treatment and/or observation. 42 were referred to B Med, 26 of these being admitted for further treatment. Dental referrals numbered 48. A total of 263 prescriptions were filled, the items prescribed most frequently being Tetracycline and Diarrhea Tablets.
2. Prevalent and significant diseases encountered, with the rate of incidence, are as follows:
a. Bronchitis – 06
b. Diarrhea – 36
c. Gonorrhea – 03
d. Upper respiratory infection – 13
3. emergency situations encountered and the treatment rendered are as follows:
a. PFC Adrian L. LeCornu, 2129084, USMC was evacuated to BAS via helicopter on 18 October after suffering 2nd degree burns of the abdomen and legs resulting from spontaneous ignition of a sand filled bucket used in the laundry. Treatment consisted of cleansing and debridement of the burns and administration of Morphine for pain. He was referred to B Med the same date for further treatment.
4. The total number of inoculations administered during the month was 33. The most frequently used serums are Plague, Cholera, and Tetanus.
5. Problem areas considered to be of major concern are as follows:
a. Medical re-supply has improved, alleviating to a small extent the prior critical shortage. Items still difficult to obtain are Hydrogen Peroxide, Cough syrups, scalpel blades, suture materials, *******, muscle relaxer and adhesive tape.
b. In the area of sanitation, this unit has been unable to obtain rat poison for effective control of the rodent population.
c. The shortage of forms peculiar to Navy service records will become a jajor problem in the near future unless re-supply is accomplished. It is to be ***** that this problem is prevalent in all activities in the Chu Lai area.
