Medical and Dental Affairs
- The total number of visits to the Battalion Aid Stations (BAS) during the month of October was 1,692.
- Prevalent medical entities encountered were:
- Gonorrhea – 4
- Diarrhea – 59
- Malaria – 33
- URI – 7
- NP Disorders – 7
- Rat bites – 2
- FUO – 80
- Dermatological conditions – 198
- Heat casualties – 37
- All suspected and confirmed cases of venereal disease were given an STS in accordance with NAVMED 22-18 and the results entered in the individual’s health record.
- All total of 90 patients were referred to 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Division (Rein), FMF. Of those referred, the following were consults:
- Dental – 21
- Ophthalmology – 3
- Eyes, nose, throat – 17
- Urology – 12
- Internal medicine – 40
- Surgical – 1
- Proctology – 4
Patients requiring further consultations were referred from the 3rd Medical Battalion to the following medical facilities:
- NSA, Da Nang – 22
- USS Sanctuary – 15
- USS Repose – 21
- 6th Con Cen – 15
- 22nd Casualty Staging Facility – 9
- The following is a breakdown of casualties encountered for the month:
- KIA – 3
- WIA – 4
- MIA – 0
- Non-hostile deaths – 0
- DOW – 0
- NBC – 155
- Weekly malaria prophylaxis was continued with the use of Chloraquine-Primaquine tablets in the Battalion rear. Daily malaria prophylaxis Chloraquine-Primaquine in Battalion forward areas.
- Sanitation inspections were held daily and weekly in accordance with Article 6000.4D, NAVMEDMAN, in the Battalion areas at Vandegrift, Quang Tri and FSB Cates. Sanitary facilities at the present time are considered adequate.
- Two Battalion Aid Stations (BAS) were maintained during the first half of the month of October. One was at the Vandegrift Combat Base and another at Quang Tri. On 16 October, a third BAS consisting of the Battalion Surgeon and three Hospital Corpsmen was opened at FSB Cates. All injuries and maladies encountered were treated by the line Company Corpsman and when required casualties were transferred for further treatment. No serious delays were encountered in resupply or evacuation during this period.
