Operation Summary – October 1967

 

Narrative Summary

The first nineteen days of the reporting period the Battalion was divided with the Bravo Command Group, Companies A and B located at Quang Tri and the Battalion (-) stationed at Camp Evans.

From 1-10 October 67 operations by the Battalion Forward (Quang Tri) consisted of squad and platoon patrols in the assigned TAOR, but the principal emphasis remained on providing security at the airfield construction site.  At 101200H October 1967 the Battalion Forward chopped OPCON 1st Marines in conjunction with Operation Medina.  Activities consisted of reinforced Company screening patrols to the southwest from 0400 to 1830 daily.  The remainder of the day/night was spent in the defense of the airfield construction site.  The Battalion Forward was relieved by the 1st Battalion 1st Marines and chopped back to 1st Battalion 4th Marines at 191200H October 67 and by 191730H October 1967 all elements had returned to Camp Evans.

The Battalion (-) at Camp Evans was assigned an OA within the 4th Marines TAOR.  Squad, Platoon and Company size operations were conducted within the assigned OA and other areas as directed by the 4th Marines.

Operations of note included a Company size reconnaissance in force in the Base Camp 114 area, a Company size search and destroy operation in northwestern portion of the Co Bi Thanh Tan Valley, a Company size reconnaissance in force in the Rao Cao/Rao Ha Dong Valley complex, a two Company search and destroy operation with the emphasis on National Route One security in conjunction with Operation Liberty II, a one Company search and destroy operation in the southwestern portion of the Co Bi Thanh Tan Valley and a one Company patrol/search and destroy operation vicinity YD 5124.

From 252000H October 1967 thru the end of the month the entire Battalion participated in Operation Granite.
