  1. Summary

During the period covered by this report, 27-31 January 1967, Battalion Landing Team 1/4 was aboard the USS Iwo Jima, USS Vancouver, and USS Point Defiance.  On 27 January Company A, Company B and H&S Company with their supporting elements, embarked aboard the USS Iwo Jima to prepare for duty with the Special Landing Force.  On 28 January all three ships with Battalion Landing Team 1/4 aboard departed Okinawa for Keelung, Taiwan and arrived in that port on the morning of 29 January 1967.  The USS Vancouver with Company C, Company D and the 107 Mortar Battery aboard was unable to obtain a suitable berthing space and departed for Subic Bay in the Philippine Islands during the afternoon of the same day.  The USS Point Defiance with G Battery 3/12 aboard sailed for Subic Bay on 31 January and the Iwo Jima with the remainder of the Battalion Landing Team aboard remained in Keelung until the following day.  All Marines took advantage of the liberal liberty policy while in Keelung, although the planning and preparation for Exercise Mud Puppy was also in progress.

  1. Significant Events

On 27 January 1967 Company A, Company B and H&S Company with supporting elements embarked aboard the USS Iwo Jima.

On 28 January 1967, the USS Iwo Jima, USS Vancouver and the USS Point Defiance sailed for Keelung, Taiwan.

On 29 January Battalion Landing Team 1/4 arrived at Keelung, Taiwan aboard the three ships indicated above.

On 29 January 1967, the USS Vancouver departed for Subic Bay in the Philippine Islands.

On 31 January the USS Point Defiance sailed for Subic Bay.

  1. Problem Areas/New Developments

The Battalion received no replacements during the reporting period since the input of personnel had been terminated when embarkation commenced.  However, the replacements previously received brought the Battalion up to manning level in most occupational fields.  The most significant shortage is in the Officer MOS 6707, Forward Air Controller.  The Battalion rates two by manning level and has none.  The only other significant shortage is in the Enlisted MOS 0141.  The Battalion rates 22 and has 16.

  5. Discipline during the reporting period was excellent as evidenced by the following information:

  8. Morale, PX, Postal Affairs, Liberty, R&R

The morale was excellent.  A very liberal liberty policy prevailed while in Keelung.  PX facilities and a library aboard each ship were available and movies were shown every night.  No mail was received while in Taiwan, however, a small delivery was scheduled upon the ship’s arrival in Subic Bay.
