  1. Awards.  During the reporting period 4 Bronze Stars, 2 Navy Comm, 1 Navy Achievement, 8 Purple Hearts and 24 Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry were presented.  The following type awards were processed recommending approval:

  19. Morale continued to be high.  This battalion utilized 24 quotas for In-Country R&R.  Out-of-Country R&R quotas utilized for the month were Bangkok – 19, Hawaii – 19, Hong Kong – 13, K.L. – 4, Manila – 2, Penang – 2, Singapore – 2, Okinawa – 4, Sydney – 17, Taipei – 9, Tokyo – 6.
  20. During the month one 1st Lt was promoted to Captain, one Staff Sergeant was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant, 80 Lance Corporals were promoted to Corporal, 91 Privates First Class were promoted to Lance Corporal and 7 Privates were promoted to Private First Class.  Two Lance Corporals were meritoriously promoted to Corporal, 1 Corporal was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant, 2 Sergeants were meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant and 1 Staff Sergeant was meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.
  21. Religious Services
  22. Spiritual coverage was provided for the Battalion during the month of January in the field and at our rear.  A total of 19 Protestant Services were conducted by the Battalion Chaplain with an attendance of 684 and 393 taking communion.  Seven Catholic Masses were given by Chaplain Carr (4th) with a total attendance of 296.  Three Memorial Services were conducted by the Battalion Chaplain with 192 attending.  Four Services were conducted by the Battalion Chaplain for other units at Vandegrift Combat Base with 64 attending.  The Battalion Chaplain was on R&R from 5 January to 14 January in Hawaii.  One Marine was Baptized, numerous counseling cases, answering letters from concerned families and notifying servicemen of casualties in their families were accomplished during this month.
  23. Hospitals and Hospital ships were visited and mail given to the member of this Battalion by the Chaplain.  One Platoon on duty at 3rd MAF was visited and mail given to them.
