  1. Summary.

During the period 1 July through 31 July 1967 the Battalion was engaged in Operation Cumberland.  From 7 July through 13 July 1967 elements of the Battalion participated in Operation Hickory II.  On 21 July 1967 the Battalion administrative rear was transferred from Camp Evans to Phu Bai.  Lieutenant Colonel Edwin A. Deptula assumed command of the battalion on 30 July 1967.

  1. Problem Areas/New Developments.

Office machines are in need of repair and/or replacement.  There is a problem in replacing office machines.  The time required for repair creates a hardship on the administrative sections.  At the close of the reporting period, rifle companies were averaging approximately 10 men above M/L, which includes an average of 20-25 non-effectives.  The average loss per Rifle Company of enlisted personnel rotating during the month of August will be 34.  The Battalion is presently 6 officers below M/L in MOS 0302.  Additionally, 6 officers (MOS 0302) will rotate to CONUS during August 1967.

  1. Morale, Postal Affairs, Liberty, R&R, PX.

Morale is excellent.  The Battalion received R&R quotas to Okinawa, Manila, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hawaii, and Taipei.  Adequate PX facilities were available to these personnel located at Camp Evans and Phu Bai.  Postal services continue to be satisfactory.

  1. Chaplain’s Activities.

Lt. A.S. Kirk (ChC) USNR, Battalion Chaplain, held a memorial service on 28 July 1967 for the men in Company B, killed in action.  Throughout the reporting period services were held for both Protestants and Catholics, counseling continued during the month with 10 cases conducted.
