  1. Good evening, Marines,
In case you aren’t already aware, it is with deepest regrets that I pass along the news that Mike (A/1/4 and a 1/4 Association member, Silver Star recipient for heroism on May 8, 1967 while in A/1/4) passed away Tuesday. I was a recruit in one of Mike’s platoons while he was on the drill field in 1973. I was privileged to be able to make contact with him about 40 years later and talk with him more or less regularly, and was especially privileged to have taken him and his wife Linda to dinner one night while I was in Florida on business. He was a Marine’s Marine, humble and loath to talk about his heroism under fire, but ready and always willing to talk about his fellow Marines.

I submitted a post in your guest book, then found you have a message board. I’m not certain as to how to post to the latter, so I figured it’d be better to notify you so you can put out the word as quickly as possible if you feel it’s appropriate.

Viewing will be at the Ammen Funeral Home in Palm Bay, FL from 1600-1800 Wednesday, August 31. Burial will be at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, Mims, FL at 1230 Thursday, September 1. I believe the phone number in your directory for him is still valid (I’ve been talking to his wife and daughter on their cell phones). If you try to contact them at the number in your directory and are unsuccessful, feel free to call me at 734-395-2721 or 734-309-8409 and I’ll pass along your contact information.

While talking with them, I got the distinct impression that they weren’t sure who in 1/4 that Mike has been in contact with. I can tell you that they would greatly appreciate support from and attendance by Marines who knew and served with him.

Please don’t hesitate to call me at any time. Thank you for any help you can give in spreading the word to his fellow Marines, and it goes without saying that their attendance would be a tremendous boost and a fitting tribute to him, and I’m certain that they would love to hear their stories and memories of him. It goes without saying that I’m going to attend, and I would be most highly privileged to meet any Marines who served with him.

Semper Fi, very respectfully, John Lawson, CWO-4, USMC (Ret)
